Marine-Based Solids Management
"Marine-Based
Solids Management Eliminates Need for Open Barge Transport, and
Land-Based Dewatering and Transportation Facilities for Contaminated
Sediments"
During operations to remove contaminated sediments
from a dredge work area, the collected sediments must be transported
and transferred to land-based facilities that are designed to remove
excess water and prepare the processed sediments for transport to
a final disposal site.
The
construction and operation of such land-based facilities introduces
permitting issues and local community impacts that in many cases
prevent cleanup projects from proceeding in a timely fashion.
Seaway's "Marine-Based Solids Management System"
is a solids handling technology that provides for safe, clean, and
containerized management of contaminated sediments on marine platforms.
It eliminates the need for the transport of contaminated sediments
in open barges or the pumping of muds to shoreside storage lagoons.
It provides the means for collecting, processing, containerizing
and transporting contaminated sediments on the water without the
need for land-based facilities.
Seaway utilizes two types of vessels in this Marine-Based
Solids Management Operation: 1) a solids processing vessel, which
removes large debris and stabilizes the sediments (muds) with cementitious
reagents and 2) a container transport vessel, which carries containers
into which the stabilized sediments can be deposited, sealed and
transported to an existing port facility, where the containers can
be off-loaded for transport by rail to a final disposal site.
